9/9/1998 Springfield Township, MI Woman Shot by Random Act of Violence by Mentally Ill Man
Kelly Rundell, now 43, was found guilty of attempted murder, but mentally ill. Shirley "Gwen" Hunter was working at the New Oakland Family Center when she had stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. Rundell approached Hunter, who held the door for him — thinking he might be a patient coming in for care. Hunter said he "looked right through her," walked passed and stopped. She next heard a loud bang and fell to the ground, feeling an extreme burning inside. Rundell shot her in the back at point-blank range. They had not known each other. When police arrived at his home minutes after the crime, Rundell had already changed his clothes. And he had disassembled and hid the gun. This helped convince the jury that he wasn't insane at the time of the crime, and that he understood right from wrong, according to prosecutors.
